이번 전시에서는 한 권의 ‘책’이 제작되는 과정에 대해 이야기한다. 여기에서 말하는 책의 제작과정은 내용에 관한 것이 아니다. 오히려 어떤 내용을 담기까지, 하나의 그릇으로서 물질적 매체가 되기까지의 역사를 의미한다. 어쩌면 현대인에게 책은 이미 완성되어 있는 또는 오히려 물러나고 있는 전통적 매체로 보일지도 모른다. 그러나 인류가 책을 만들고 그 책이 인류에게 영향을 미치기까지는 다양한 가공방식의 발전과 여정이 숨겨져 있다.
“공정에 따라, 물질은 미묘하게 변화한다. 제작자는 물질이 특정 미디어가 되어가는 각 단계에 개입하여 누군가에게 전달받은 물질을 가공하고 다시 어딘가로 떠나보내는 사람이다.” — 윤성서
스스로를 ‘만드는 사람’, ‘제작자’라고 칭하는 윤성서에게 책은 완성된 형태가 아니다. 오히려 윤성서의 책은 그것이 걸어온 여정의 가치를 응축하고 새로운 가치로 나아가기 위한 중간적 물질로서 존재한다. 이 중간적 존재가 다름 아닌 매체의 특성일 것이고, 이 매체는 또 다른 창작과 생산을 가능하게 한다. 그런 의미에서 이번 전시를 통해 보여지는—창작된 하나의 이미지가 가공되어 가는 과정—‘생산, 복제, 매체화, 전달’ 프로세스는 책에 국한되지 않는다.
생산에서 전달에 이르기까지 매체화된 것들은 필연적으로 가공과 변화의 과정을 겪는다. 그렇다면 우리가 매일 포스팅하며 사용하고 있는 디지털 매체는 과연 어떤 여정을 함축하고 어떤 방향으로 나아가는 것일까.

This exhibition will present the story regarding the process of producing a 'book'. The focus of the book production process featured in this exhibition is not on the books’ content, but rather a book’s history of carrying its content and thus becoming a physical medium as a vessel. Perhaps to modern people, books may be perceived to be a traditional medium that takes on a finished form already or may even seem retrograding. However, the development and journey of the various processing methods are hidden within the tales of humankind's bookmaking and the books' effect on humankind.
"A matter changes subtly depending on the processing technique. A producer is someone who processes the matter that they have received through someone else, by intervening in each stage of the matter that transforms the matter into a particular medium, and then sends it to another place." — Sungseo Yoon
For Sungseo Yoon, who defines herself as a 'maker' and a 'producer,' a book never takes on a complete form. Instead, for her, a book exists as an intermediate matter that condenses the value of its past voyage in order to take a step towards embracing new values. This in-between presence would be none other than the nature of the medium, and this medium enables a fresh creation and production. In that sense, the stages of 'production, duplication, medium, and delivery' - the course of processing a created image - demonstrated in this exhibition goes beyond books.
Things that have become a medium from production to delivery inevitably experience the stages of processing and alteration. Thus, what kind of journey is implied in the digital media that we consume through countless posts every day, and in which direction is it moving?

소도구를 가지고 간결한 수제본 중철노트를 만듭니다. 종이라는 물질을 감각하며 재료를 탐구하고 흩어져 있는 종이가 하나의 사물이 되도록 실로 엮어봅니다. 새로울 것 없는 재료들이 만나 우리가 잘 아는 사물이 되기까지, 어떤 재미있는 일이 일어날까요?
